QUINCY, IL (WGEM) -- Imagine a world without sound and not being able to communicate with a vast majority of the people around you.

That's the reality for millions of people who suffer from hearing loss.

Quincy University held a Deaf Awareness Day on campus Friday and did something to get people's attention; they made a statement without saying a word. Students and staff went the whole day communicating only by sign language, to show how difficult it can be.

"We want to make sure everyone knows about deaf culture, about sign language. Trying to develop more awareness so that people know how hard it is for deaf people to communicate and more hearing people need to know," signed Paul Kiel, American Sign Language Teacher at Quincy University.

Students and staff wore blue ribbons today to bring attention to the discrimination against the deaf.
